Dream Back-Up Dancer: Radiohead's "Karma Police"
An unconventional choice, I know, but no song has ever left as longstanding a mark as Radiohead's "Karma Police". With it's brutal you-get-back-what-you-give lyrics, I can envision strong choreography filled with moments of forceful jumps and contemporary turn sequences. The movement would certainly need to reflect the seriousness of cosmic revenge and the rationale for the consequences.
The initial sequence would be followed by an awakening - a rebirth into understanding and moving forward instead of backward. The lyrics at the end of the song portray someone who lost themselves but thankfully comes back to a place of inner peace. With more serene and beautiful choreography, this portion of the dance would signify when light overcomes dark.
Ohh, I can picture it now. Storm clouds giving way to sun. People changing from enemies to companions. A world left in a better place.
I'm ready when you are, Thom Yorke.
Way back in college, I used to take classes with Pearl Ann at Point Park, and one of my fave routines she did was to Exit Music for a Film by Radiohead. To this day I still love that song and think about that dance!! I don't think many people think of Radiohead when they think of dance soundtracks, but they are sooooo good for it!
